    Hello Andrew!! Is that a pic of the original?? I'm pretty sure the original was fully nude - one of the notable examples of a nude Christ. It was actually discussed in another blog recently - which you/your readers may be interested in: Giorgione, Michelangelo and Renaissance Nudity

    Hi This is the second version. The first one was abandoned in it's roughed-out condition when he discovered a black vein in the white marble. During the Baroque period a bronze girdle was added to the statue. You are right the statue was original commissioned by Metello Vari to be nude. Although the first one was also finished. The first version, rough as it was, was asked for by Metello Vari, and given him in January 1522, for the little garden courtyard of his palazzetto near Santa Maria sopra Minerva. It was extensively reworked in the seventeenth century, it is in the sacristy of the church of San Vincenzo Martire, at Basso Romano near Viterbo; the black vein is clearly distinguishable on Christ's left cheek.
