"Blackberry Woman" Creole Folk Art by Andrew LaMar Hopkins

"Blackberry Woman" Creole Folk Art by Andrew LaMar Hopkins

My latest Masterpiece is tilted "Blackberry Woman". It depicts A Creole street vendor walking down the flagstone sidewalk in front of a New Orleans Greek Revival house next to a French Olive jar planted with Spanish daggers and a seated dog. Over her head on a Neoclassical cast iron balcony a lady reads a book next to a potted orange tree.  Women commonly sold goods on the streets of New Orleans throughout the city's colonial and antebellum history. Forming a significant presence among the city‘s market places, they sold various food items which included coffee, calas, and pralines. Perhaps the most popular of the Creole of color street vendors was the praline women. They attracted the attention of visitors as well as residents.
