Hi Stephilius, Thanks for your comment. I think this happen at night so this could be a nightgown or just sheets rapped around the Dauphine. I think the artist wanted to show the Dauphine as a classical figure with draped robe as this was the NeoClassical period in art in France.
Oh, I know, Andrew; I was just funning! Just as you do, I LOVE these wonderful old paintings, but sometimes, if you look beyond the beauty of the image, and try to make real sense of what's presented, they can be pretty silly - and that just adds to their charm, eh? : )
Hi Stephilius, The original Dauphine was not as beautiful as this blonde head young man, In fact in his portraits he did not look anything like the young man depicted in the painting.
Was the dauphin in the middle of his bath? Or maybe getting a massage? ; )
