Mary Plantation House A French-Colonial style plantation is located downriver
from Braithwaite, Louisiana. It was built in 1795 and enlarged in the 1820's.
I was invited to this crawfish boil at Mary Plantation House sometime
during the Summer of 2005 before Hurricane Katrina when everything was still
well in Louisiana. Mary Plantation is a Creole style plantation house built in
1795 making it the oldest structure in Plaquemines Parish, The plantation
recently was sold at auction for $770,000.
Overlooking the east bank of the Mississippi River on 7 1/2 beautifully
landscaped acres of high ground with century's old moss draped live oaks near
Braithwaite. The former owners good friends, Blaine and Stephanie are
fellow preservationist and antiques dealers who owns properties in the French
Quarter and Missouri.
The ambience of the place on the sunny summer day was amazing! There was a
old fashion banjo band on the Veranda serenading us with melody's of the Old
South. Crawfish boiling in large pot's and poured onto makeshift sawhorse
tables, and great conversation. I will remember the day well because I sold over
$20,000 in Antiques. Blaine and Stephanie Had lovingly restored the century's
old home and furnished it with furniture and decorative arts of the late 18th
early 19th century.
Mary Plantation – Like many Louisiana plantation homes, Mary began as a
simple cottage around 1795 but by 1827 was expanded to reflect her occupants’
growing prosperity. The house is the oldest surviving structure in Plaquemines
Parish – Braithwaite, Louisiana.
Typical of an early Louisiana French Creole planter’s home, Mary’s plan
consists of an upper story supported on a tall raised brick basement of 16″
thick brick. Each story is comprised of two large front rooms, and two smaller
rooms flanking a small entry area with a stairwell in the rear. The roof is
constructed with cypress timbers pegged together to form a colombage frame
supporting slate tile. The upper and lower stores are wrapped by broad galleries
supported by cypress chamfered shaped posts above and stucco columns
beneath.
